Vast is a new late Tetraploid ryegrass from DLF with a very interesting story! Selected on Irish farms for Irish farmers, Vast has been trialled and tested by DLF since 2020. After impressing initially at our Waterford trial site, Vast excelled when sown on our Partner Farms across the country as part of the DLF Variety Grazing Trial.

The DLF Variety Grazing Trial was set up to see which grass varieties performed best when grazed by cows in rotation rather than cut by a machine as is standard in DAFM testing. Ultimately, we wanted to see what varieties produced the lowest graze-out and highest utilised tonnage and add value to just pure kg DM produced.

It is, after all, the grass varieties that cows eat and turn into milk that is most profitable on farm. Of the 21 varieties trialled across 4 farms over 2 years, Vast consistently performed in the key grazing metrics we use to identify the best grazing varieties;

  • Residual Sward Height or ‘graze-out’
  • Dry Matter Yield
  • Utilised Yield – the amount of kg of each variety that was eaten
The trial included some of the most popular varieties in the country and the graph below shows clearly that Vast can compete and beat many of the top varieties available at the moment. Our R & D team are constantly striving to produce better varieties to serve our customers and Vast is the perfect example of how DLF’s local approach to evaluating new varieties is producing for Irish farmers.
